Finding and Contacting Your Senators and Representatives


Voting Information

  • How to check your voter registration status (and other voting information) - An NC State Board of Elections site provides (using your name) your voter registration status and other information such as polling place, your jurisdictions (all types of districts), sample ballot if available, absentee ballot information, and voter history.

  • Guilford County Board of Elections - Guilford County site provides information on how to vote in the county, including info on absentee voting, early voting, general voter information, candidate information, election schedule, forms, and election results.

  • North Carolina State Board of Elections - Site of the NC State Board of Elections with information on how to vote and run for office in North Carolina, including voting early, voter ID rules, voter tools and forms, provisional voting, election results, and many others.


Guides and References

  • The Indivisible Guide - In December 2016, former progressive congressional staffers published ”Indivisible: A Practical Guide to Resisting the Trump Agenda” to teach us how to influence our members of Congress to work towards progressive policies. The Guide has been updated to continue to support current advocacy.

  • Letters from an American: Dr. Heather Cox Richardson - Dr. Richardson is a professor of history at Boston College. She describes these letters as “a chronicle of today’s political landscape.” They are excellent, easy-to-understand daily discussions of events, and often how they relate to history.

  • 5 Calls - A non-profit organization that makes it easy to reach members of Congress. They research and describe current critical issues and offer scripts to use when you call your members to push for progressive solutions.

  • Americans of Conscience Checklist - A teacher of social media strategy and advocate for progressive values created the Checklist in 2016. Her goal was a kinder and more just America. Her organization researches current issues and offers scripts and easy actions for anyone to help fight injustice and regressive policies.

  • Brennan Center for Justice - The Center is a nonpartisan law and policy institute focused on upholding democracy. It is an excellent source of data. They are a “think tank” that researches all current issues and offers analysis and findings (e.g., judicial reform, redistricting, racism, constitutional law).

  • NC Policy Watch - This is a news and commentary outlet dedicated to informing North Carolinians about issues that affect them, including legislative, environmental, and judicial issues. It is a project of the North Carolina Justice Center and offers daily newsletters and a Policy Watch blog, the Pulse.


Other Progressive Organizations

  • Carolina Forward and Carolina Forward Facebook page - A nonprofit, grassroots progressive policy organization that believes North Carolina should be a diverse, multiracial democracy whose state government ensures progressive change. Carolina Forward conducts research and provides reliable data on voter issues in North Carolina.

  • Down Home NC - A rural organizing project, focusing on working citizens in small towns and in rural NC and involving them in fighting for democratic values. They offer educational sessions on relevant issues (e.g., school boards), and support to progressive candidates.

  • Democracy Docket - A progressive media platform that provides extensive information and analysis on voting rights, elections, redistricting, current litigation related to these, and more. Marc Elias, Democratic voting rights attorney and champion, founded Democracy Docket in 2020.

  • Common Cause and Common Cause NC - A nonpartisan, grassroots organization focused on equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all citizens. Common Cause is involved in litigation and grassroots activism. Common Cause NC offers updates on NC issues and actions citizens can take.

  • League of Women Voters of North Carolina and League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad - The League is a nonpartisan organization, promoting (nationwide, statewide, and locally) voting rights, voter registration, and fair representation in NC. Their website offers updates on current voting procedures and on NC issues.

  • Democracy NC - A nonprofit organization guiding activists in North Carolina to advocate for fair elections, voter rights, and ethics reform. Their website offers updates on NC issues, and opportunities to volunteer.
