Take Action

The "We Choose To Fight" national Zoom call February 2 was great -- exactly what we all needed to have organized leadership and inspiration from a great coalition who know how to fight for our Democratic rights. Here's the call recording if you missed it, or want to hear those motivating messages again.

Good Trouble Lives On Call to Action

One of our calls to action from the Good Trouble Lives On Rally is to educate our friends and neighbors on the upcoming municipal elections this NOVEMBER! Did you know that the voter turnout for municipal elections is abysmal - it was 16% during the last Greensboro municipal election. That means every voter we get to the polls can have a large impact!

Feel free to share this graphic to make sure your networks are registered to vote AND know that there are elections coming up this November!

Save Public Education: Phone Bank & More!

We are partnering with Public School Strong and Down Home NC to help get the word out about the #BigUglyBill and its implications for education in our state.

There are an alarming number of people who don't know what the passing of HB-1 (the "Big Beautiful Bill") will mean for public schools across the country. The drastic funding cuts in the bill will have serious consequences for North Carolina as well.

Here's a brief snapshot:

  • overcrowded classrooms and poor learning outcomes due to growing teacher shortages

  • crumbling school buildings and failing infrastructure in schools across the state

  • staff shortages of bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and other support staff like nurses, social workers, and librarians

It can all be overwhelming and demoralizing, but we can not give up. Our children are depending on us! Here are some things that we can do:

  • Help spread the word about the funding cuts so parents and public school supporters won't be totally blindsided.

  • Invite people to get involved, no matter what their political affiliation is. If they care about public schools, we need them to join us.

  • Connect with other public school advocates so we can leverage our collective power and work together to fight the assaults on our schools.

Here's how you can take action now with Public School Strong and Down Home NC:

  • Join their Wednesday evening phone banks to help raise awareness and bring more people to this cause. Register Here

  • Join the monthly HEAL Together NC call to learn, connect with others across the state and strategize. Register Here

  • Go here to find updates and some of the latest news about the state of public education in North Carolina.

Sign Petition to Pause Student Loan Payments

According to an official at the Department of Education (ED), interest will begin accruing for anyone in the SAVE forbearance as early as August 1. Right now, the SAVE plan is being challenged in the courts, and the Department is claiming that a ruling from back in February requires them to resume interest.

ADD YOUR NAME: PAUSE STUDENT LOAN PAYMENTS NOW

The timing of this announcement really could not come at a worse time. While so many of us are worried about housing, food, medical, and childcare costs, we’re now being dealt another blow. Additionally, most income-driven repayment (IDR) plans are going away in the coming years due to the recent reconciliation bill, which will leave borrowers with limited repayment options and skyrocketing student loan payments. This is simply unacceptable.

Advocate for Teachers: Write to the State Health Plan Board

The North Carolina GOP is at it again: They have consistently denied any pay raises to teachers over the years, stating lack of funds -- while they dish out millions in vouchers to religious unregulated private schools. Now they are pushing to increase the premiums and out-of-pocket maximums for educators' health insurance benefits. This was one of the only perks for their underpaid public service. Out-of-pocket maximums are slated to increase from $5900 per person up to $9000 per person and deductibles would increase from $1500 per person up to $5000 per person. The cost of carrying their entire family on the plan would increase as well. We are already having problems recruiting enough teachers in the current pay environment and this will not help.

Please write to the members of the State Health Plan Board and let them know you won’t stand for those who educate our children to be treated this poorly any longer. NC has been near the bottom of teacher pay for many years now. It’s time for a change! There are 10 members on the State Health Plan’s Board of Trustees and they can all be contacted via e-mail at SHPBoard@nctreasurer.com.

If you prefer to send snail mail, you can send written correspondence to:

Time Sensitive! - Call NC House Member Cecil Brockman

There are still three more veto override votes on the horizon at the #NCGA!

Although we have gotten some good news from The Guardian when it comes to the anti-DEI bills that were vetoed at the North Carolina General Assembly (https://rebrand.ly/DEI-Federal-Ruling-Guardian), these bills are still at risk of becoming law. These are the only remaining bills whose veto has NOT been overridden. Since there is no current law or regulation banning DEI, at this moment, we can fight anti-DEI at the state level in more assertive and self-confident ways. The validity of the state level policy can now be called into question.

Help us team up with our #educators across the state! We need to play our part at the state level and not just wait to see what happens at the federal level. The meaning of Governor Josh Stein's vetoes of the three anti-DEI bills and the need to protect his vetoes have taken on more urgency and more meaning!

You can be sure that Republican MAGAs are in this short period up until August 26 redoubling their efforts, putting the Dem Defectors under more pressure. But the Dem Defectors should now be told about and reminded of the Federal court ruling by their constituents. If we can stop these NC laws from passing and have more wind in our sails at the federal level, this could signal a shift in working conditions for our educators!

Please call NC House Member Cecil Brockman and encourage him to uphold Governor Stein’s vetoes on these anti-DEI bills! It is also important to call Democratic NC House Members in Mecklenburg and Edgecombe counties as well!

Call scripts here https://rebrand.ly/DEI-Protect-Veto-Scripts

** UPDATED (8.20.25): ALL VOTES CANCELLED FOR TUESDAY AUGUST 26th! The next possible set of votes is going to be on September 22nd! Keep making the calls!
