The GOP Freedom Farce
We penned a letter on behalf of the membership of Indivisible Guilford County and delivered it to the GOP members of the Guilford County Delegation to the NCGA. It could apply to the GOP on a national level as well.
The former Republican Party prided itself on freedom. They have had a monopoly on that word since the Reagan years. My, how times have changed. You and the rest of the Republicans in the NCGA have done an about-face over the last 15-20 years and accelerated that change in the last 5-10 years.
The majority of North Carolinians want freedom to send our children to school without worrying about never seeing them again and want to be able to enjoy their daily lives without worrying about being gunned down. Yet guns are easier to get than registering to vote at this point. The majority of North Carolinians want freedom to work a job and make a decent living, yet the minimum wage has not changed in nearly 15 years in the state. The majority of North Carolinians want to make their own reproductive choices, yet SB20 was still passed without any real debate over its merits, ignoring the majority of the state’s citizens and the recommendations of all the state’s medical societies.
The majority of North Carolinians want clean drinking water and clean air, yet the NCGA continues to side with corporate polluters over its citizens who face the brunt of pollution’s impact. The majority of North Carolinians want teachers to determine how to run their classrooms, yet the NCGA continues to degrade their profession, refuse to adequately fund public schools, and take away teachers’ freedoms to do what they have been trained to do. The majority of North Carolinians want the freedom to live their lives, but the NCGA is obsessed with which bathroom someone uses and “otherizing” certain portions of the population with a host of anti-trans bills.
The majority of North Carolinians WANT their freedoms back, but the NCGA is actively preventing this from happening. You are an absolute disgrace and not representative of the citizens you serve.
